Shawn P. Smith is the Director of the Holdings Protection and Recovery Staff at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), where he leads a six person staff in the development and administration of policies, training, and procedures to prevent the loss of institutional holdings. Mr. Smith began his career at the National Archives in 1993, shortly after earning a BA degree in American History from Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. Beginning in 2008, Mr. Smith has led process improvement projects and spearheaded the agency’s effort to incorporate efficient practices into work processes after he earned certifications as a Greenbelt in Lean Six Sigma from the University of Tennessee School of Business and Department of Defense. Mr. Smith is a three-time recipient of the Archivist of the United States Award (2000, 2006 & 2018) where he was recognized for implementing a number of new procedures and processes that significantly enhanced the research experience for on-site researchers.
Shawn, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the married father of two teenaged children. Shawn enjoys music, trivia, and studying basic financial planning.
